03/03/24 Weekly Congregational Update

Dear Members and Friends of Holy Trinity,

Here are this week’s updates:

  • The March edition of The Messenger was mailed out yesterday.  It has the complete worship schedule of the remaining Lenten services, as well as the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and Easter services.

  • The Memorial Service for Rick Polsdorfer will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Sullivan-King.  The visitation will take place from 9:30-11:00 a.m. before the service.   The Luther’s Ladies Circle is handling the food arrangements for the family.

  • Sunday is the last day to drop off donated breakfast items for our Hope Missions of the Update project.  See the complete list of needed items in your bulletin or recent newsletter.  As you can see in the photo above, we have had an excellent response but we still have a little more room on the table for even more items.

  • Sunday I will be preaching on the subject of the Ten Commandments, based on our First Reading from Exodus 20:1-17.

  • Then on Wednesday evening, our next Lenten meal and worship service will take place.  The Youth will be providing their traditional soup and grilled cheese sandwiches at 6:00 p.m., followed at 7:00 p.m. as we gather to look at the “Daily Bread” from the Bible in worship.

  • There is still time to sign up for Amy Goodson’s Bread Baking Worshop which will take place on Saturday of next week, March 9.  To date, we have 8 who have indicated they would like to participate.  We have room for even more.

In Christ,

Pastor Fischer

02/26/24 6PM Lutheran Men in Mission meeting

LUTHERAN MEN IN MISSION SUPPER MEETING
Monday, February 26
6:00 p.m.
FELLOWSHIP HALL

PROGRAM: Standing In Awe
We will explore how both science and our faith call us to stand in awe at the mysteries
and wonders of God’s marvelous creation.

02/25/24 BOLD WOMEN SUNDAY

BOLD WOMEN SUNDAY
During both of our worship services on February 25, Holy Trinity will be celebrating the bold women in our life. It is on this day that we give thanks to God for all women who have acted or are acting boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. Some women are bold in their unceasing prayers. Other women are bold in their service to those in need. Still other women are bold in their advocacy or through their hospitality. Whether we live out our bold story of faith in the workplace, family, home, or community, our faith compels us to make a difference in the lives of others. It’s all about living out our baptismal call, about being a disciple of Christ. Brenda McGowan will be giving our Temple Talk on this day.

3/9/24 bread baking workshop

On Saturday, March 9th at 1:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, there will be a bread baking workshop.

All who would like to learn more about the ingredients and the spiritual process which goes into the bread used for communion here at Holy Trinity are welcome to join us.

This will be a hands-on event. No experience is needed.

After our loaves are baked, we will join together in fellowship by sharing a simple meal of soup and bread.
A sign-up sheet will be in the narthex and the sacristy so we can be sure everyone has the needed supplies.

Please contact Amy Goodson for any questions.

2/25/24 Weekly Congregational Update

Dear Members and Friends of Holy Trinity,

Here are this week’s updates:

  • You are asked to keep Phil Cahaly in your prayers as he undergoes neck surgery tomorrow.

  • This coming Sunday, Brenda McGowan will be doing a brief Temple Talk at both of our services as our Bold Women Sunday presenter.

  • For our sermon message Sunday, we will be coving what I call, “the speed bumps of life,” those times when God is trying to grab our attention.  It is based on our gospel reading for the day, Mark 8:31-38.

  • During our Late Service Sunday, we are delighted to be receiving Robert and Sophie O’Connor as new members of our congregation.

  • We are off to a fantastic start to our “Breakfast Blessings Gathering.”  Even though we officially do not start until this coming Sunday, many of you have already begun to bring in the needed items for Hope Missions of the Upstate.  Items requested are listed in your bulletin and February newsletter and can be placed in the room off the narthex.  The last day to drop off donated items is Sunday, March 3.

  • Monday evening, the Lutheran Men in Mission will gather for their monthly supper meeting.  Pastor Bruce Booher will be our presenter.

  • Then on Wednesday evening, we will continue our Lenten journey with a meal at 6:00 p.m., followed by our Lenten midweek worship service at 7:00 p.m.  We will be exploring “Unleavened Bread,” recorded in Exodus 12:1-11.

  • Speaking of bread, Amy Goodson is hosting a Bread Baking Workshop on Saturday, March 9 beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall.  If you are interested in learning more about the ingredients and process that go into baking the bread for our communion services, there is a Signup sheet in the narthex.  Participants will be making bread and then joining together for a meal of soup and bread.

In Christ,

Pastor Fischer

Helpful Hint of the Month

Helpful Hint of the Month
“What are the disciplines of Lent we mention at the conclusion of the Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness during Lent?”

You may have noticed on Sunday mornings that the last paragraph of the Confession and Forgiveness is slightly differing during the season of Lent in our worship services. The minister invites the congregation to “the discipline of Lent:
self-examination and repentance, prayer and fasting, sacrificial giving and works of love.”

Lent has long been a time for renewing faith. In the early Church, the custom of fasting before Easter was practiced, initially for only a few days at a time, until it eventually became a 40-day period for Lent as a reminder of the 40-day period of Jesus’ fast in the wilderness.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

MARK YOUR CALENDARS
WHAT: Choral Evensong
WHEN: Tuesday, March 19 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church – sanctuary

The Anderson University Music Students and the Church of the Ascension, Anglican Church
will be using our sanctuary for this special event. Evensong is a church service traditionally held near sunset focused on singing the psalms and other biblical canticles. It is loosely based on the canonical hours of vespers and compline. Old English speakers translated the Latin word vesperis, which became ‘evensong’ in modern English.
